Through the mingling of design, function, and form, architectural objects describe other worlds by their very presence.
BACKGROUND
KNOWLEDGE:
From staircases to mosaics, from fireplaces to fountains, the
care of
architectural objects requires the combined skills of a
conservator and
a historian. The location of the object, the use of the object
and the
historical significance of the object, define the practices of
conserving
architectural objects.
CARE,
HANDLING and STORAGE:
As with any object that is to be conserved, caution needs to be
used when
dealing with temperature, light and humidity. Depending upon the
material
used to create the object, the care, handling and storage of it
may vary.
Because of this, it is best to establish the material or
materials used
and then develop the plan for its care, handling or storage.
Other issues that may have to be dealt with are whether to move the piece from its existing area or maintain it where it is. These are not simple questions and need to be thoroughly discussed with experts in the field.
